Job overview

We are currently recruiting to a Consultant Geriatrician with an interest in major trauma care and surgical in-reach..

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will have duties in acute geriatric medicine and will join a team of 8 Consultant Geriatricians. We have 4 acute geriatric wards and a 24-bedded Frail Elderly Assessment Unit (FEAU).  Post holder responsibilities will include covering an acute ward with the 2 ortho-geriatricians and FEAU on a 1 in 9 rota. If the post-holder wishes to join the Acute Medicine on-call rota, this is currently 1 in 16, with weekend cover also including a Short-Stay medical ward.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

In addition the post holder will:

  • Provide medical input to the care and management of hip fracture patients on Ward 225 - a dedicated 36-bedded fractured neck of femur ward, in conjunction with the 2 ortho-geriatricians already in post. This service treats 750 hip fracture patients per annum.
  • Provide support and guidance to the teams caring for elderly patients admitted following major trauma. 26% of the patients (circa 300 pa) treated within the major trauma centre are over 75 years of age. The new post-holder will work alongside surgical trauma specialities to address the complex medical problems of these patients.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Eligibility for entry to the Specialist Register for Geriatric Medicine and General Internal medicine (GIM)(or within 6 months of CCT).
  • Experience and a special interest in working with hip fracture patients at Specialist Registrar grade
  • MRCP or equivalent.
  • Full GMC Registration.
Desirable criteria
  • An appropriate higher degree, eg MD, PhD or equivalent
  • Experience in working with major trauma patients at Specialist Registrar grade

Clinical Experience & Training

Essential criteria
  • Experience and an interest in the care of patients with hip fractures
Desirable criteria
  • Critical care experience

Academic, Research & Audit

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of training in research methodology
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of having undertaken original research
  • Publications in relevant peer-reviewed journals in the last five years.
  • Research experience
