Senior Training Fellow Diabetes & Endocrinology


This post is not recognised as a formal training slot. However, the training opportunities will be the same as the other ST3 doctors.

The post-holder will work with the diabetes/general medicine and endocrinology team to provide diabetes & endocrinology/ general medicines service to a catchment population across Staffordshire, Leek Moorlands and North Shropshire. The successful applicant will join a Diabetes and Endocrinology team made up of 8 Consultants. We also have 2 x 28-bedded acute medical wards where most of the patients with acute metabolic diseases are admitted, supported by junior and middle grade staff (3 SpRs).

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will work across two Diabetes & Endocrinology / General Medicine wards, in conjunction with another SHO and the consultant who provides cover to the ward.
Participation in out-of-hours-work and weekend ward rounds is required as part of this post.
The post-holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the patients on the ward, the majority of whom will have had a period on another hospital ward prior to transfer to Diabetes & Endocrinology / General Medicine.
The consultant facilitates a morning ward Round with a requirement to work towards prompt discharges, aiming for Home before Lunch.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be based at Royal  hospital and may be required to rotate between the general medical wards.

The post holder will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing clinical care general patients and will work with consultants, specialist registrars, Trust grades, foundation doctors, GP trainees and advanced nurse practitioners.  The post holder will work on Diabetes wards, as well as providing a liaison service to other wards/departments and undertaking outpatient clinics.  

University Hospital of North Staffordshire is the teaching Hospital for Keele University Medical School and the post holder will gain experience in teaching undergraduate medical school students and physician associates as part of their job plan. The Department has a strong emphasis on teaching and training and professional development and has weekly departmental educational meetings, audits, mortality meetings and also Hospital Grand rounds

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP part1/part 2written or equivalent examination cleared
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced Life Support
  • MRCP (full examination cleared)


Essential criteria
  • Minimum of 2-3 years Senior House Officer/CMT or clear demonstration of equivalent experience
  • 1-year in a substantive post within the UK or clear demonstration of equivalent experience elsewhere
Desirable criteria
  • Audit and Research in the specialty
