The University Hospital of North Midlands, Mid Cheshire and East Cheshire NHS Trusts are working collaboratively to form a Pathology network (NMCPS) in line with a NHSI directive.

Medical Laboratory Assistant 

Location:  Royal Stoke University Hospital

We are seeking applications from motivated, enthusiastic individuals to work as part of the Biochemistry team.

Main duties of the job

The post involves:-

  • Receipt and identification of Biological samples from Hospital and GP patients. Eg Venous Blood, Spot urine /24hr Urine samples – CSF / Faeces
  • Barcode labelling and data entry of confidential information into the Pathology computer system (Masterlab) to enable downstream analysis / sample processing.
  • Phoning results for Biochemistry and dealing with incoming calls & assorted enquiries from Acute wards / GP surgeries.
  • Use of centrifuges to spin Blood samples into enable the serum ( liquid part ) to be analysed for required investigations..
  • Distribution of samples to all Pathology departments. Referral to external laboratories within the UK for specialist testing not available at UHNM
  • Basic laboratory analysis and support for the department including  maintenance of analysers – calibration / Quality checks. Currently Siemens is the main diagnostic supplier
  • A good general education to GCSE level or equivalent is required and experience in data entry is essential. Attention to detail to transfer key demographic information.
  • Previous experience of laboratory work is preferable but not essential as in house training will be given to enable the successful applicant to meet the requirements of the job.

Knowledge Training & Education

Essential criteria
  • Good standard of Education demonstrated by GCSE grades A-C in Maths, English and a Science subject.
  • Relevant NVQ level 2 or equivalent. A suitable Apprenticeship such as Clinical Laboratory Support. The IBMS Certificate of Achievement.
  • Awareness of Health and Safety matters.
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ level 3 in Clinical Laboratory support


Essential criteria
  • Familiarity with IT systems.
  • Experience of working in a team and alone.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous experience of working in a Laboratory environment.
  • Experience of demonstrating tasks to others.

Personal Qualities

Essential criteria
  • Prepared to work flexibly including participating in weekend and other out of hours rotas as necessary.
  • To participate in a shift pattern if required to do so by the relevant department.
  • Ability and willingness to fulfil the travel requirements of the post if relevant – primary place of work as per JD but on rare occasion may reasonably be asked to work at another site where the Trust has responsibility for Pathology services
